Why does my child struggle to explain themselves?
It can be confusing when your child seems to know what they want to say but cannot explain it clearly. They may give short answers, use vague words, talk around the point or become frustrated because their thoughts are not coming out the way they intended.
This can affect conversations, learning, friendships and confidence, especially when others misunderstand them.
What this can look like
Your child may:
- know what they mean but struggle to put it into words
- use vague words like “thingy”, “that one” or “you know”
- talk around an idea because they cannot find the exact word
- give short answers or say “I don’t know” when they do know
- talk a lot but still leave you unsure what they mean
- struggle to explain events clearly or in the right order
- become frustrated because they cannot get their thoughts across clearly
What may be going on
These difficulties may be linked to expressive language needs, word-finding difficulties, narrative difficulties, sentence formulation difficulties or Developmental Language Disorder.
Sometimes children have ideas in their mind but find it hard to organise them into words, sentences or a clear sequence.
How assessment helps
A speech and language assessment looks at how your child uses vocabulary, forms sentences, explains ideas, tells stories and organises information.
This helps identify whether your child needs support with word-finding, sentence structure, narrative skills, vocabulary or confidence in expressing themselves.
How I can help
I provide online assessment and therapy to help children express their thoughts more clearly. Therapy may focus on vocabulary, sentence-building, storytelling, explaining events, organising ideas and communicating with more confidence.
I also give parents practical strategies to support communication in everyday life.
