Why does my child lack confidence when communicating?

Some children can communicate more than they show. They may speak freely at home, but become quiet, hesitant or anxious in other situations. They may avoid speaking up, let others answer for them, or seem unsure even when they know the answer.

When communication feels difficult, confidence can be affected too.

What this can look like

Your child may:

  • avoid speaking up in groups
  • let others answer for them
  • seem anxious when attention is on them
  • speak quietly or give very short answers
  • avoid asking for help when they do not understand
  • seem more capable at home than in school or unfamiliar settings

What may be going on

These difficulties may be linked to language needs, social communication differences, anxiety, low confidence, selective mutism or previous experiences of being misunderstood.

Sometimes children avoid communication because it feels too hard, too exposing or too unpredictable.

How assessment helps

A speech and language assessment helps identify whether your child’s confidence is being affected by speech, language, understanding, social communication or anxiety-related communication needs.

This allows support to be planned in a way that feels safe and manageable.

How I can help

I provide calm, supportive online assessment and therapy that works at your child’s pace. Support may focus on building communication confidence, helping your child express themselves more clearly and giving parents practical strategies to support progress beyond the session.

For children who find speaking anxiety-provoking, support is carefully planned so they are not pressured to speak before they are ready.

Not sure if this sounds like your child?

That’s okay. You do not need to know the reason before asking for help.
