HOW ONLINE THERAPY WORKS
Flexible effective support from home
Online Speech and Language Therapy allows your child to access specialist support without travelling to a clinic.
Sessions take place through Zoom and can be arranged around school, homework, revision and family routines.
For many children, working from home can also feel less intrusive and tiring. Once the session finishes, they can return immediately to dinner, homework, rest or family life.
For older children and teenagers, this can be particularly practical because therapy can fit around increasingly busy school commitments.
Online therapy may include:
✓ Direct work with your child
✓ Parent coaching and guidance
✓ Therapy activities tailored to your child’s interests
✓ Collaboration with school where appropriate
✓ Practical strategies that can be used in everyday life.
ASSESSMENT & THERAPY SESSIONS
A clear, individualised approach
Initial Assessment
An initial online assessment is usually approximately 90 minutes.
This includes time with parents to take a detailed case history, followed by time assessing your child’s speech, language and communication online.
Existing school, NHS or other professional reports can also be considered where relevant.
The purpose of assessment is to understand your child’s current communication profile and decide what type of support would be most appropriate.
Therapy sessions
Online therapy sessions are usually 45 minutes long and are commonly arranged in blocks of six sessions.
Therapy is individualised rather than following the same programme for every child.
Activities can be adapted around your child’s age, interests, motivations and longer-term goals so that therapy remains meaningful and relevant to their everyday life.
For older children and teenagers, therapy may increasingly focus on communication for:
✓ School and academic progress
✓ Confidence and friendships
✓ Independence
✓ Further education
✓ Interviews and employment
✓ Everyday adult communication.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT & THERAPY PLANS
Working together for real progress
Online therapy does not mean that parents are left outside the therapy process. The final few minutes of each session provide an opportunity to explain what has been worked on, discuss carryover and raise any questions.
You will receive a structured therapy plan with clear goals and strategies to use at home. This helps everyone around your child work towards consistent outcomes.
✓ Clear therapy goals and rationale
✓ Practical strategies for home and school
✓ Ongoing parent involveent and support
✓ Shareable with school staff where appropriate.
