A Journey from High School Friendship to Becoming a Speech and Language Therapist
Looking back at my high school days, there’s a particular memory that stands out—a memory that planted the seeds for my journey towards becoming a Speech and Language Therapist. It all started with a simple act of kindness that grew into a lifelong passion for making a difference in people’s lives. This story is a testament to the power of empathy, understanding, and the pursuit of a meaningful career.
In those bustling high school hallways, I befriended a classmate who was facing challenges that weren’t immediately obvious. She displayed behaviours that seemed a bit different – avoiding direct eye contact, offering hugs at unexpected times, and struggling with social interactions. At the time, I wasn’t aware of the term, but now looking back I can guess she must have been Autistic.
Rather than shying away from what I didn’t understand, I found myself drawn to her with a natural empathy. Our friendship grew, and I became someone she could trust to help navigate the complexities of social situations. The fulfillment I felt from being there for her was like nothing else.
What made our friendship special was that it was built on understanding and support. Simply being there to listen, to be a dependable friend, made a world of difference. Word about our friendship spread, catching the attention of the school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo).
Through their observations, the SENCo recognized the positive impact our friendship was having. My role in her life was becoming a catalyst for change. Over time, she started engaging more with other students, forming new friendships, and feeling accepted. It was the beginning of a heartwarming transformation that extended beyond just the two of us.
As high school gave way to the sixth form, my passion for understanding communication difficulties and the workings of the human mind deepened. This interest was more than a passing phase; it became a driving force. I got involved with the school’s Special Educational Needs (SEN) department, initiated paired reading sessions, and introduced sign language classes. These efforts weren’t just about our friendship anymore; they were about creating a supportive environment for others facing similar challenges.
One memorable chapter of this journey was introducing sign language classes. The enthusiasm from fellow students was remarkable. Guided by the SENCo, we partnered with experts to bring sign language to life. We even performed a popular song in sign language during a school assembly, sending a powerful message of inclusivity and diverse communication.
A turning point came when I attended a Powerful Voices conference. This event focused on empowering individuals, especially those with disabilities, to find their own voices and advocate for themselves. It was during this conference that I realised my path was leading me towards becoming a Speech and Language Therapist.
This journey has taught me that even small acts of kindness can create lasting change. By embracing empathy and compassion, we can make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. Our actions, no matter how simple, can plant the seeds of transformation that touch and enrich lives.
As I continued on my path to becoming a Speech and Language Therapist, the foundations of empathy formed through that initial friendship remain a guiding principle. It’s a reminder that genuine connections and understanding are at the heart of making a difference.
This journey is a testament to the potential within each of us to create a future filled with purpose and fulfillment. It shows that our actions, no matter how unassuming they may seem, have the power to influence lives in profound ways.
