Why isn’t my child talking as much as other children?

It can feel worrying when your child is not talking as much as other children their age. You may notice they use fewer words, give short answers, struggle to explain what they want or become frustrated when they cannot get their message across.

Every child develops differently, but when communication difficulties are affecting confidence, learning, behaviour or everyday life, it can be helpful to understand what is happening and what support may be needed.

What this can look like

Your child may:

  • use fewer words than others their age
  • find it hard to put words together into sentences
  • struggle to explain what they want, need or how they feel
  • give short answers when you know they have more to say
  • avoid talking when finding the right words feels difficult
  • become frustrated when they cannot get their message across

What may be going on

These difficulties may be linked to delayed language development, vocabulary difficulties, word-finding difficulties, expressive language needs or Developmental Language Disorder.

Sometimes children understand more than they can say. Other children may have difficulty organising their thoughts into words, sentences or stories. An assessment helps us understand your child’s individual profile rather than guessing from the outside.

How assessment helps

A speech and language assessment looks at your child’s strengths and needs, including how they understand language, use words and sentences, explain ideas and communicate in everyday situations.

This helps us identify what kind of support would be most helpful and whether therapy, parent guidance, school advice or a written report may be needed.

How I can help

I provide online speech and language assessment and therapy tailored to your child’s needs. Sessions may focus on building vocabulary, sentence structure, confidence, storytelling, explaining ideas or using language more successfully in everyday life.

I also work closely with parents so you understand what your child is working on and how to support progress beyond the session.
